On August 14, 2024, the Development Empowerment Women Association (DEWA), in collaboration
with Saima Khan Enterprises and Nimatoona
Organic Food Centre, organized a plantation drive
at Nimatoona Organic Food Centre, Talash. The
initiative was part of DEWA’s ongoing efforts to
promote environmental sustainability and
combat climate change through communitydriven activities.
The event coincided with Pakistan’s
Independence Day, adding a sense of national
pride and responsibility toward preserving the
environment for future generations. The
plantation drive aimed to not only contribute to
the ecological well-being of the region but also
raise awareness about the importance of organic
farming and environmental protection within the local community.

  Objectives of the Plantation Drive

1. Promoting Environmental Sustainability: The plantation drive sought to contribute to the
   ongoing efforts to reduce carbon footprints and combat the adverse effects of climate change.
2. Encouraging Organic Farming: Nimatoona Organic Food Center, as a local leader in organic
   farming, played a pivotal role in educating participants about the benefits of sustainable
   agricultural practices.
3. Community Engagement and Empowerment: By involving local women, youth, and
   community leaders, the event fostered a sense of ownership and responsibility towards
   environmental preservation.
4. Strengthening Partnerships: This event highlighted the importance of collaboration between
   local enterprises like Saima Khan Enterprises, non-profits like DEWA, and community
   organizations like Nimatoona in achieving shared goals for social and environmental wellbeing.
   Planting and Environmental Impact
   During the event, over 100 saplings of fruit-bearing and indigenous trees were planted across the
   premises of Nimatoona Organic Food Centre. These saplings were carefully chosen for their ecological
   benefits, with a focus on species that would
   thrive in the local environment and contribute to
   food security in the region. The fruit trees, in
   particular, were selected to provide long-term
   benefits to the community, offering both
   economic and nutritional value.
   Community Involvement
   One of the highlights of the event was the active
   participation of local women and youth, many of
   whom are already engaged with DEWA’s
   Women Voices and Leadership Pakistan (WVL-P)
   project. Their involvement underscored the
   importance of grassroots participation in
   environmental conservation efforts. The
   collaborative atmosphere fostered a sense of
   unity, with participants working side by side to make a tangible impact on their environment.
   Remarks from Organizers
   Najma Falak Naz, Executive Director of DEWA, emphasized the significance of the event:
   “This plantation drive is a reflection of DEWA’s commitment to empowering communities not only
   through social and economic initiatives but also by addressing environmental challenges. Our
   collaboration with Saima Khan Enterprises and Nimatoona has made this event a success, and we hope
   to continue working together to create a sustainable future for Talash.”
   Saima Khan, CEO of Saima Khan Enterprises, also shared her thoughts:
   “By taking small yet meaningful steps like today’s plantation drive, we can contribute to the larger
   fight against climate change and create a healthier environment for our future generations. I am proud
   to be part of this initiative alongside DEWA and Nimatoona.”
